Colt Model 1860 Army Type II Richards Conversion .44 CF Antique Revolver – Serial 5046

This antique Colt Model 1860 Army is a Type II Richards Conversion chambered in .44 centerfire. Produced during the 1870s, these conversions represent Colt’s transition from percussion revolvers to metallic-cartridge designs. This example is serial number 5046 and displays the two-line July 25, 1871 and July 2, 1872 patent markings associated with the Type II configuration.

The barrel has been period-altered to approximately 6 1/8 inches and fitted with a reset blade front sight. Other identifying details include the one-line New York barrel address, Richards conversion ring, bored-through cylinder with a partially visible naval engagement scene, steel grip frame marked “44 CAL,” and smooth one-piece walnut grip. Matching serial numbers are visible on the barrel assembly, cylinder, frame, trigger guard, and backstrap. The wedge and wedge screw are replacements.

The revolver has an overall dove-gray patina consistent with age and use. The walnut grip has been lightly sanded and reoiled and shows chipped toe areas and scattered handling marks. The bore is well defined but frosted, and the action is reported to function properly. It is accompanied by a contemporary burgundy-lined wooden presentation case and comes from the former collection of noted Old West historian and consultant Phil Spangenberger.
